Guitar Lessons, North Shore (#5826)
Basement Guitars is based in Hillcrest, North Shore and offers tuition in guitar, bass and banjo.
Twenty-four years old. I began learning guitar at the age of twelve. During my time at Northcote College I played in the jazz big band, jazz combo, orchestra and a blues/rock band organised outside of school.
When I left highschool I started teaching guitar part time with a music education franchise whilst completing a one year course in contemporary music performance.
The next year I taught guitar full time with the franchise at local primary and intermediate schools.
I went back to teaching guitar part time the next three years while I completed a degree in audio engineering. During these years I also picked up the banjo and have become a loyal convert to bluegrass.
In 2015 I left the franchise to travel around America while working and tutoring guitar at a summer camp for kids.
Now that I am back in New Zealand I am going to begin teaching guitar privately and also introduce banjo and bass lessons. If this sounds like something you could be interested in then please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

The content of the lessons extend the more the student advances and largely depends on their age and where they want to go with their instrument.
For beginners who are young or unsure about their motives for learning their instrument I like to introduce both music notation and tablature right from the get go. I cover basic songs, techniques and introduce them to various styles and genres. Once they have learnt the fundamentals of their instrument and have had a taste of the different ways forward the student normally has a good idea of where they want to go.
For students who just want to learn how to play their favourite songs and are not so interested in the finicky parts of music then a typical lesson would involve looking at which songs they are interested in which are within their skill level then downloading the chords/tablature and sitting down and tackling the song together.
For more advanced players lessons may involve in-depth music theory, compositional techniques, improvisation and all the tech-nerd stuff that goes into recording your own music, such as mixing, mastering, microphones and various studio techniques.
