Benny Greb

Benny Greb has become one of Germany’s leading drummers, driven by a mixture of passion, creativity and control. He is a much sought after sideman and a successful educator at clinics and drum camps, but most of all he is pouring all his heart and soul into his own musical projects like the trio Moving Hearts. Experts all over the world have been praising his talents – he was awarded Germany’s acclaimed Echo Jazz 2016, and for three consecutive years, the American Drum Magazine elected him “the world’s best clinician”. Among fellow musicians and fans, he is mostly renowned for one thing though: his dynamic groove.

There is a wide range of signature products that were designed following Benny Greb’s suggestions and ideas – for instance a Sonor snare drum, a Meinl cymbal set and a set of drum sticks for Vic Frith. Greb’s DVD The Language Of Drumming became the bestselling music tuition video worldwide in 2009.

Greb also thrived as a professional musician. He supported well-known German musicians like Stoppok, Thomas D. or Mark Forster as a sideman. Together with the prestigious NDR radio orchestra, he performed Frank Zappa songs, and he played with jazz musician Nils Wülker.

His modern playing style combines many different influences with a lot of depth and a wealth of nuances, but Greb insists to emphasise the musical and emotional side of his sound instead of the technical aspects. “I want to reach out to drum fans and average music listeners at the same time”, he says. “If the audience just sits there, saying, oh, how interesting, I didn’t to a good job. What counts is the energy that will have the listener realise: Wow, those guys are just playing their asses off.
