Whitireia NEW ZEALAND
Whitireia is a government owned tertiary institute known for its high student success rate and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, in Porirua, Whitireia has grown to be a tertiary institution of choice for over 8,500 students who now study at one of our contemporary campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Kāpiti and Porirua.
Whitireia offers a range of music programmes from certificate to degree level. These programmes have all been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications; they are all approved by The New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
All music programmes are offered from the Porirua Campus in Wineera Drive and include the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music), Certificate in Rock Jazz and Commercial Music, Certificate in DJ Music, Certificate in Live Sound and Event Production, Certificate in Foundation Music and the Certificate in Work Skills.
Training facilities are modern and include recording studios, digi labs with Apple computers, music production suites, performance room equipped with lighting, PA, projector and large screen along with performance equipment, fully equipped band rehearsal rooms, fully equipped DJ booths, individual practice rooms equipped with keyboards, stereos and practice amps, specialist music teaching rooms, keyboard theory lab, music library and student music listening area.
The staff who run the music programmes at Whitireia are all professional musicians with years’ of experience in many aspects of the music industry both nationally and internationally. A large number of musicians who are top of their field are also closely associated with the Whitireia music programmes.

Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music)
Study and develop skills for the music industry, subject areas include: theory, composition, arranging, instrumental studies, band workshops and performance recording and production. Learn about the music business and develop relevant communication skills. Create a professional body of work in year three and graduate with the skills and knowledge to begin a career in the music industry as a performer, composer, teacher or producer.
Certificate in Rock, Jazz and Commercial Music
Become a practical musician, by developing your musical skills and your understanding of the industry. Subject areas include: theory, composition, midi, instrument and professional studies, bank workshops and performance. Graduates enhance their chances of entry into the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music).
Certificate in Live Sound and Event Production
Learn skills in live sound engineering, lighting, production design and event management to become a stage technician, AV operator, sound engineer, crew for live music or stage productions.
Certificate in Foundation Music
Have a go at taking music seriously on this introductory programme. Learn performance skills, playing with a band, professional studies and music theory.
Certificate in DJ Music
For new comers and experienced DJs wanting to become professional, this programme includes DJ performance, turntable skills, the art of mixing and the history of DJ, music production and industry studies.
Certificate in Work Skills (Specialisation in MCing & DJing)
This programme will appeal to students who have some experience with music; playing an instrument, singing or playing in a band or to those students who would like to participate and learn about music. Topics covered include music production, song writing, performance, recording, health and fitness, self-management.
All programmes start in February of each year with the exception of the Certificate in Foundation Music programme which starts in July.
