Monday 14 - Monday 21 May 2012 : Intensive Writing Weekends and Masterclasses for Songwriters with Berklee’s Pat Pattison

World renowned songwriting teacher and author Pat Pattison will present two 2-day Songwriting Seminars and Master Classes in Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland this May.

Wellington Masterclass: May 14,
6:30pm-10:30pm
Whitireia New Zealand

Tauranga May 16 and 17
Bay of Plenty Polytech

Hamilton May 18, 1pm-4pm
WINTEC

Auckland seminar: May 19 and 20,
10am-4pm both days
Auckland Masterclass: May 21, 6:30pm-10:30pm
MAINZ, 150 Victoria St, Auckland

In these seminars, songwriters will explore the challenges from Pat Pattison's new book, Songwriting Without Boundaries: Lyric Writing Exercises for Finding Your Voice, in depth.

Pattison’s groundbreaking work on metaphor opens a portal to seeing the world not only for what it is, but for what it could be. Writers learn to integrate Object Writing into their Songwriting; create powerful and effective metaphor, using straight-forward exercises to extend and reverse metaphor, and finally, work with rhythm and rhyme, preparing your writing for its journey into song.

Says Pattison, “These seminars will open your mind and release your best ideas.” Keynote speaker at the West Australian Music Conference in Perth June 1, and featured speaker at APRA’s SongSummit May 26-28, Pattison is looking forward to working with songwriters in Australia and New Zealand as they hone their craft.

Participants in the seminars will have an opportunity to receive constructive critiques of their songs and lyrics. Spaces in Master Classes are also available for both participants and observers.

“I would not be the writer I am today without [Pat’s] teaching and his unique and comprehensive understanding of language, rhyme, rhythm, and structure. To this day, when I struggle with a lyric and find myself falling short, I am usually ignoring some very sound advice contained in these pages. And I read it again."
- 3-time Grammy winner Gillian Welch

"I took a class with a great teacher named Pat Pattison... I learned a lot in that class...and I still read that book, Writing Better Lyrics. I think it's great."
- 7-time Grammy winner John Mayer

“Pat Pattison does the impossible. He takes the mystery out of songwriting without taking the heart out of it”
– Hit Songwriter David Wilcox

Pat Pattison is a Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches Lyric Writing and Poetry.
In addition to his four books, Pat has developed five online courses in lyric writing and poetry for Berkleemusic, Berklee's Online School. He has written more than 30 articles for Home & Studio Recording Magazine, and Performing Songwriter. Pat continues to present songwriting clinics across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Several of his students have won Grammys, including John Mayer and Gillian Welch.
