Berlin, September 5th, 2011 –

Native Instruments today announced MASCHINE MIKRO, a highly affordable new entry into the world of its popular groove production system. By combining the full-featured MASCHINE software with a streamlined and compact controller, MASCHINE MIKRO makes the acclaimed tactile and intuitive music creation approach of MASCHINE available at a significantly reduced physical footprint and price. At the same time, the new 1.7 software version provides advanced integration with the instruments and effects in the KOMPLETE 8 and KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE bundle both for MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO users.

MASCHINE MIKRO is based on a highly portable controller that provides hands-on control of the central MASCHINE features at two-thirds of the size and weight of the full-sized hardware. Utilizing a single display and a dynamically assigned high-resolution master encoder to enable its compact footprint, the bus-powered MIKRO controller retains the distinctive full-sized 4x4 matrix of pressure-sensitive, dynamically backlit MASCHINE drum pads with their acclaimed response and feel.

MASCHINE MIKRO includes the full-featured MASCHINE software with its versatile pattern-based live and step sequencing, VST and AU plug-in hosting, real-time audio recording, sample editing and advanced multi-effects. The MIKRO version also contains the full 6 GB MASCHINE sound library, expandable with the series of MASCHINE EXPANSIONS, as well as the free KOMPLETE ELEMENTS sound collection. With the new 1.7 software version, both MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO now also benefit from advanced integration with KOMPLETE 8 and KOMPLETE 8 ULTIMATE, providing advanced sound browsing and parameter mapping for all instruments and effects contained in the bundle.

To further complement the growing MASCHINE product range, Native Instruments is also about to release iMASCHINE, an iOS software that brings intuitive groove creation to the iPhone and iPod touch platform. With four tracks, audio sampling, high-quality effects and an expandable arsenal of professional instruments and drum sounds from the regular MASCHINE library, iMASCHINE allows users to sketch grooves on the go, and later transfer them into the full MASCHINE software for detailed editing and arrangement. iMASCHINE is planned for release through the Apple App Store in October.

New Limited Edition Warwick Rusty Range of Basses Now In Stock

Succumb to the lust for rust…

Combining high-tech craftsmanship and passion, the Rusty Finish is a typical Warwick innovation. A very thin iron coating is applied to the wood of the body and oxidized through a sophisticated and controlled procedure creating actual rust rather than an imitation. Even magnets are able to stick to the surface because of this unique finish. As a special highlight, the pick-ups are coated and parts of the hardware are artificially aged. The result is a fascinating mix of extraordinary looks, stunning acoustical properties, and a unique feeling. Typically Warwick; anything but normal.

Rusty - Streamer LX

In 1996, the Streamer LX appeared on Warwick's product list for the very first time. Now it has been submitted to a model upgrade: an ergonomic construction with an arched, two-piece Maple body, shaped for ultimate playing comfort, combined with a bolt-on Ovangkol neck with a Wenge fingerboard and solid chrome hardware.

As a 4-string, the Streamer LX is equipped with a P/J-pickup configuration, as 5-string it comes with a J/J-, and as 6-string with H/H-equipment. Thus it produces the typical and variable Warwick-sound, bass-emphasised with a good punch, thanks to the used woods, its construction and the electronic components.

Bolt-on

Available as 4-, 5- and 6-string

Available as right-handed or left-handed*, as well as fretted and fretless* models

AAA Coloured Flamed Maple body

24 frets

Active MEC pickups (4-string: P/J, 5-string: J/J, 6-string: H/H)

Active MEC 2-way electronics

Sabian Introduces Players Choice for 2012

Traditionally, drum companies spend vast sums of time and money on product development so that they can tell drummers what to like – and what to play. In 2012, Sabian will turn this paradigm completely on its head.

With the introduction of Players’ Choice, the innovative cymbal maker is providing a forum that allows drummers from around the world to choose its 2012 product offering. It’s the first time ever an instrument manufacturer has done so. In addition, SABIAN will bring together a diverse group of its top endorsers to play the new cymbals so that drummers everywhere can watch, and choose.

Here’s how it works: innovative Vault artisans from SABIAN have been asked to develop a list of 12 exciting new cymbal models – Rides, Crashes, Hats, Effects and more. The cymbals will be carefully shipped to a studio in California, where a group of top SABIAN endorsers – including Mike Portnoy, Dave Weckl, Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio, Dave Elitch and Stefanie Eulinberg – will be filmed playing the cymbals in all styles and genres. Viewers will be able to watch video online and vote to eliminate one cymbal each week, for 8 weeks. At the end of the 8 weeks, the top 4 cymbals will be announced as SABIAN’s new product offering at the annual NAMM show.

The voting begins today. A complete list of cymbals and endorsers will be featured at www.CymbalVOTE.com so register now! Each week, anyone who has signed up will receive a text message when a cymbal is voted off the list, prompting them to vote again for their favourites – all of which can be done conveniently from their mobile device.

You LISTEN. You VOTE. You DECIDE

Moog Music Announces Animoog Instrument App for iPad

ASHEVILLE, NC – October 17, 2011-- Moog Music today announced the release of Animoog, the World’s first professional polyphonic synthesizer designed for Apple’s iPad. For a 30-day, limited-time price of only $.99, professional musicians, hobbyists and music fans alike can have access to Moog’s newest, groundbreaking synthesizer technology. Regular price US$29.99

The heart of Animoog is Moog’s Anisotropic Synthesis Engine (ASE), a technology that has been in development at Moog for nearly six years. Animoog captures the vast sonic vocabulary of Moog synthesizers and applies it to the modern touch surface paradigm, enabling any user to quickly sculpt incredibly fluid and dynamic sounds that live, breathe, and evolve as they play them.Whether users are new to synthesizers or are professional musicians, Animoog’s unique user interface gives them the ultimate tool for total creative expression.

“Animoog is an amazingly entertaining instrument,” said Mike Adams, president of Moog Music. “It is fun and educational. There will be people who discover the joy of making music using a synthesizer through Animoog who might not have otherwise. It is truly an entertaining experience for anyone.” Adams explains, “ASE was originally designed for Moog’s hardware synthesizers, but the technology is so incredible that we decided to make it available to everyone. With Animoog, we’re taking the fear out of buying a professional music application, and giving people a nearly-free opportunity to explore a truly inspirational creative tool.”

Animoog removes the boundaries of conventional instruments and brings an exciting array of creative tools to users’ fingertips. Its graphical user interface is dynamic and immersive. Much more than a simple app, Animoog takes full advantage of the iPad’s multi-touch surface. It gives artists the creative freedom to create and intimately control an entire sonic universe.

Ayad Al Adhamy, of the band Passion Pit, says, “While there are other iPad synthesizer apps (trust me - I might have all of them) what makes Animoog different is that it is not an app but an instrument. Moog has filled in the gap that other apps haven't - it is simple to use and it sounds great!"

Avid Unveils New Pro Tools|HDX and Pro Tools 10 Software

Avid Unveils New Pro Tools|HDX and Pro Tools 10 Software—Industry Leading Solution Makes Big Leap in Sound and Speed

Burlington, MA, 2011-10-20

The world's fastest, best sounding, and most powerful digital audio platform delivers state-of-the-art performance through revolutionary new hardware and software

Avid® (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced the all-new Pro Tools|HDX digital audio workstation and Pro Tools® 10 software, delivering greater performance, higher sound quality, and innovative new capabilities that set new standards for audio post and music production. Both are designed to provide the most capable, highest quality, scalable solutions to meet the evolving needs of the industry, and deliver better performance, faster workflows, and easier collaboration than ever for professional users.

Pro Tools|HDX

The Pro Tools|HDX system enables customers to mix bigger, more complex productions, with the rock-solid performance and stability that Pro Tools|HD customers have come to expect. This new system represents a milestone in Avid’s development of DSP-accelerated hardware, delivering up to 5x more DSP per card, over a thousand dB of additional headroom, and up to 4x the track counts and 2x the I/O compared to its Pro Tools|HD Accel predecessor. And as customers’ needs grow, the system can be scaled to increase track counts, power, and I/O, using up to three Pro Tools|HDX cards and multiple Pro Tools HD Series interfaces.

With this addition to the Pro Tools|HD family, there are now two powerful system choices. Customers can choose the Pro Tools|HD Native system if they need the advanced workflows and sound quality of Pro Tools HD, and want to leverage their host computer to get the best performance and lowest latency. Or customers can choose the new flagship DSP-accelerated Pro Tools|HDX system if they require consistent peak performance and near-zero latency to handle extremely large and complex productions. Together, the Pro Tools|HD product family provides the highest performance, lowest latency, and greatest sound quality available for the most demanding audio post and music production professionals.

Mix bigger, better projects faster

Get up to 5x the processing power of previous generation cards

Manage larger productions with fewer cards, with up to 4x the playable track counts

Work with up to 64 channels of I/O per card, enabling larger configurations with fewer cards

Get more headroom—less headaches

Dramatically improve recording and mixing audio quality with over 1,000 dB additional headroom and higher resolution sound, thanks to the new floating-point architecture

Capture, monitor, and output audio in pristine clarity with a choice of Pro Tools HD Series interfaces

New AAX plug-in format—built for the future

Pro Tools HD 10 introduces the new AAX (Avid Audio eXtension) plug-in format, enabling better workflows and sound parity when sharing sessions between DSP-accelerated and native-based Pro Tools systems

With two formats available—AAX DSP and AAX Native—AAX opens the door to future advancements in Pro Tools technology

Pro Tools HD 10 software—included

Record and play back up to 256 audio tracks per card (or play back up to 768 tracks with three cards) to support the most massive mixes

Get great recording and playback responsiveness with the extended disk cache, which can load entire sessions into RAM, and ensures maximum track counts from networked-attached storage, such as Avid Unity™ ISIS®, and slower local drives

Control up to 12 Pro Tools|HD systems from one using the Satellite Link option

Mix audio from up to two Pro Tools|HD systems with a D-Command® control surface through Multi-mode

Pro Tools 10

New Pro Tools 10 software adds major new features to the world’s leading digital audio workstation, delivering on top requests from both audio post and music professionals. With it, Avid introduces several new tools and timesaving workflows, such as the top-requested Clip Gain, which separates pre-mix levels from Pro Tools software’s renowned mixing automation, greatly speeding up and improving the workflow between sound editors and mixers. Customers will also be able to achieve higher sound quality and better performance than ever, whether they’re recording, composing, editing, mixing, or playing back their sessions.

Work faster and easier with the most robust tools

Speed up pre-mix and editing workflows with Clip Gain

Experience better performance—even on network-attached or slow local drives—with disk handling improvements and real-time fades

Get more flexibility—and 24-hour timeline capability—when conforming multiple projects into a single timeline

Sound your best, faster than ever

Use multiple file formats and mixed bit depths in the same project—including interleaved—without converting files

Record, edit, and mix in higher resolution with 32-bit floating-point file format support

Get the sound of the renowned System 5 console EQ and dynamics with the Avid Channel Strip plug-in, now included with Pro Tools 10

"Today's audio post and music professionals are faced with evolving challenges and much more demanding productions that require more power, extended capabilities, and better sound quality than ever before,” says Chris Gahagan, Avid’s senior vice president of products and solutions. “Pro Tools|HDX and Pro Tools 10 software mark an enormous leap forward in sound quality and efficiency, enabling our top professional customers to deliver their best sounding, most creative work in less time."

What customers are saying

"The engineers at Avid are thinking about the way people listen to and create music,” says Tony Maserati, mixer, producer, and engineer (Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys). “The design and the architecture of the new Pro Tools|HDX are going to allow us to do things that we could only have imagined. It’s faster at getting the idea from my head to my workspace. It makes things happen quicker and allows those ideas to come to fruition faster—both on the technology side and the workflow. Does that give me a competitive edge? Of course it does."

"We’re trying to make art and express ourselves and work towards making something that’s really enjoyable to the audience,” adds Will Files, sound designer at Skywalker Sound (The Tree of Life, The Smurfs, Cloverfield). “Having this technology lets us work faster and easier—with fewer constraints—and achieve our artistic intent with fewer hurdles. I’m over the moon to see all of these new features in Pro Tools 10 that I’ve been wanting for years. The fact that you can [now] play sessions off of a network storage [device]—that’s going to change everything. That alone—especially for a large facility such as ours—will allow us to manage our projects in a completely different way."

"Pro Tools|HDX with Pro Tools 10 sounds amazing,” says Vaughn Merrick, engineer, mixer, and producer (Amy Winehouse, Jason Mraz, The Chemical Brothers). “The power of HDX finally allows me to record at 176k sample rates and 32-bit floating bit depth without having to worry about power or latency. This is a huge step up from TDM. When people hear how good this system sounds, I believe there is going to be a paradigm shift in what people expect from their digital systems.”

Avid Vantage

Concurrent with the launch of these exciting new solutions, Avid is pleased to announce the Avid Vantage™ Program, an annual membership program for Pro Tools customers that provides many great benefits.

Often imitated, never duplicated, Ludwig snare drums have been the industry standard since 1911. The tradition and quality continues on today better than ever with a sound that could only be Ludwig. Listen to any hit song from the 60’s through today and chances are you’re hearing a Ludwig Snare Drum.

Ludwig Snare Drums are the most toured and recorded snare drum in the world and with good reason. From the smooth round perfection of the bearing edge to the precision cut of the snare bed, Ludwig Snare Drums are in a league of their own.Often imitated, never duplicated, Ludwig snare drums have been the industry standard since 1911.
One of the primary reasons Ludwig is “the most famous name on drums” is because of the legendary Black Beauty Snare Drum.

The Ludwig Black Beauty brass shell is constructed of a single sheet of brass that is machine drawn and spun into a seamless beaded drum, then black nickel plated with a beautifully exquisite finish. The shell provides a warm, round metallic tone.

With any of the three strainer options of P85 Supra-Phonic, P86 Millenium or P70 Super-Sensitive strainers, the Black Beauty responds with excellent sensitivity at all volumes. Choose from Imperial or tube lugs, die cast or triple-flanged hoops, and a smooth or hand hammered shell. The 70 year tradition of the Ludwig Black Beauty carries on as the ultimate snare drum in the industry.

Troy Sanders of Mastodon chooses Warwick Basses

Mastodon is an American metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1999. The band is composed of Troy, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. They have released
five full-length albums to date, expanding their musical borders from early raw sludge riffs to later psychedelic multi-layered songs, yet maintaining progressive style with unusual time signatures and odd instrumentation.

Mastodon has risen through the ranks of the metal underground to playing sold-out arena tours with the likes of Metallica, Alice in Chains, the Deftones, and Dillinger Escape Plan. They are widely considered to be at the forefront of the recent upswing in heavy metalís popularity around the globe.

Their latest record, entitled The Hunter, was released on Roadrunner/Reprise on Sept 26th, 2011.

Warwick has inaugurated the occasion by building a custom Mastodon-themed Streamer Stage II, adorned with symbols from their past albums in beautiful silver inlay and bestowing it on Troy.

Moog Music Debuts The Ladder, a Dynamic Transistor Ladder Filter

For Immediate Release:

Moog Music Debuts The Ladder, a Dynamic Transistor Ladder Filter

– First 500 Series Module from Moog Music-

AES • NEW YORK CITY • October 20, 2011—Moog Music, a North Carolina-based electronic musical instrument manufacturer, today announced the release of The Ladder, a Professional 500 Series Dynamic Ladder Filter based on Bob Moog's original ladder filter design. The Ladder is Moog Music’s first 500 series module for the Pro Audio market and is designed to add depth, flexibility and classic Moog vibe to sound sources.

“There have been a lot of firsts for Moog this year." said Mike Adams, President/CEO of Moog Music Inc. "The release of Animoog, the first professional synthesizer for the iPad has introduced us to whole new segment of customers. Now The Ladder will reacquaint Moog with the Pro Audio community that embraced Moog Modular Synthesizers in the 1960's. We are very happy to see the market utilizing this exciting format and we look forward to developing other modules.”

The Ladder packs all the punch, fullness and analog euphoria of the original Moog Filter, but adds key component and feature upgrades required for professional studio use. From classic Moog filtering and vibe to modern sweetening and wild, exciting behavior; The Ladder is a powerful, articulate sound sculpting tool.

The Ladder features include:

Low Pass and High Pass: The Ladder has inherited the smoothest all analog filter section possible. Choose between LP and HP at the flick of a switch.

Cutoff: Simply adjust this knob to determine where The Ladder begins to sculpt the sound.

Attack and Release: These variable controls allow you to perfectly dial in the timing behavior of The Ladder's envelope section. Use them to open and close the envelope as fast as lightning, or slow as molasses.

Amount: Use in Positive or Negative mode for mild to extreme sound shaping and manipulation. The amount determines how much signal is sent to the envelope section of The Ladder. From slight timbral excitement and voicing to extreme compression-like behavior and even reversed filtering is achievable.

Resonance: Controls the amount of harmonic bump at the cutoff frequency. This is the voice of The Ladder. Create sweet, dynamic or extreme speech like behavior and beyond. Accentuate specific frequencies to excite a sound or create completely new and unique ones.

NOTE: The Ladder's Resonance control can push the unit into self-oscillation. This can be used for effect if desired.

2Pole/4Pole: Select how aggressive the filter slope is. 2 pole is equal to 12db per octave, which is smooth and sweet, while 4 pole is 24db per octave, which is hard, aggressive and most similar to a Classic Moog filter.

Bypass: Totally transparent relay bypass for routing and A/B comparison

Pre-order yours today!

More information on The Ladder can be found at
http://moogmusic.com/products/500-series/500-series-ladder-filter

About Moog Music: When Bob Moog invented the Moog synthesizer in 1964 he revolutionized Popular music.
Jeremy Corbett's Fender Custom Shop '57 Relic Stratocaster

Corbie’s Blonde

When well-known TV comedian and Radio DJ Jeremy ‘Corbie’ Corbett announced his retirement from Auckland’s MORE FM radio station after 18 years on air, he had no idea what his colleagues had in store for him.

In appreciation of his years of excellent service to the NZ radio industry, Jeremy was recently presented with a surprise gift of a magnificent Fender Custom Shop ’57 Relic Stratocaster in stunning white blonde – supplied by NZ Rockshops. Corbie’s fans and workmates alike will know that he is quite a keen guitarist, who had been known to profess to colleagues on the occasional basis that his “dream guitar” was a Fender Custom Shop Relic Stratocaster with a maple fretboard.

NZ Rockshops were there to watch the presentation of the guitar to the venerable comedian….. who , for once, was almost stuck for words. “I’m floored”, Corbie managed to utter, whilst viewing this beautiful ash-bodied blonde for this first time.
“Like all Fender Custom Shop guitars, this Strat is an absolute work of art,” says Rockshop’s Guitar Product Manager, Matt Walsham. “Only the best grade woods go into these guitars and the craftsmen that build them are second to none. I played this one myself before it was presented to Jeremy and it’s an amazing guitar!”

Fender Custom Shop were the first company to popularise the now-common “Relicing” phenomenon back in the 1990’s – by coming up with an idea to make a brand-new guitar look like it’s been heavily gigged for thirty years. The finished article looks incredibly convincing and is a sought after style of guitar, hunted by afficianados everywhere. Jeremy’s new pride and joy features an Ash Body, 50’s style neck profile, single ply pickgard and a high-degree of “Relicing”.

NZ Rockshops would like to wish Jeremy all the best for his continuing TV and comedy career, and hope to see Corbie and his new Blonde in action one day soon.

New Range of Hofner Guitars

The Swinging Sixties are back at the Rockshop

There are few guitar brands in the world that are as tightly linked to the British invasion of the 1960’s than Hofner. After Paul McCartney bought his first Hofner 500/1 “Violin Bass” from a department store in Hamburg, then used it to write the history of Rock and Roll, Hofner instruments became a staple of musicians up and down Europe….

Even before this however, Hofner guitars had already made their indelible mark on guitar history. Look down the list of documented Hofner users, and it turns into a “who’s who” of the 1960’s/1970’s brit-rock scene…

Eric Clapton learnt to play guitar on a Hofner acoustic..
Mark Knopfler, George Harrison, Hank Marvin, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Albert Lee, Peter Green, Allan Holdsworth… all used Hofner Electric guitars in their early careers. Even the grandmaster himself – Jimi Hendrix had a Hofner Club 50 that made a few appearances.

NZ ROCKSHOPS are proud now to deliver to you some of these classic 1960’s instruments, reinvented in their modern form – the Hofner CT series!

HOFNER CT CLUB SOLID

The new Hofner Club Solid breaks with tradition! Not hollow, instead this model has a solid mahogany body and a flamed maple top bringing you fantastic rock tones. We've added a pair of high output Hofner 'Diamond' humbucking pickups to produce a powerful warm rock sound with plenty of sustain. With the Hofner metal bridge and our famous trapeze tailpiece as well, this Club guitar sets the standards for the modern guitarist. Available in Black or Honey Burst finish.

$1299

The Hofner Colorama was our best selling solid body guitar in the 1950s and 60s. Hofner have based the new Colorama II on the model from 1961 but brought it thoroughly up to date. This Hofner electric guitar is fitted with two P90 pickups, a three way switch and volume and tone controls. The Hofner Colorama II offers quality at a very affordable price making it ideal for those wanting a stylish guitar with vintage guitar looks.

$799

HOFNER Galaxie CT

In the 1960s the Hofner Galaxie was one of the most popular solid body guitars finding favour with numerous beat groups. Today the new Hofner Galaxie retains the original style and shape together with many of the original design features. Vintage guitar looks. As with the original electric guitar we include a Hofner tremolo system giving you even greater versatility.

$999

Based on the original classic Hofner Verythin guitar body shape from 1960 with the body depth of only 1.25 inches. The Hofner Verythin was extremely popular with groups during the 1960s beat boom era. The Hofner Verythin CT not only captures that unique 60s sound but also has the ability to produce tones ranging from deep gutsy blues through to cutting distorted rock. At Hofner we achieve this by fitting a centre block in the body to produce more sustain, deeper tones and less feedback. The CT model is now fitted with striped position markers on the neck just like the original Hofner 1960s model. You'll certainly stand out from the crowd playing a Hofner Verythin CT. It truly is a versatile guitar at a very affordable price.

Passion Pit rose to fame in the late 2000s with the infectious, hands-in-the-air sound of their debut album Manners, which infiltrated the mainstream and quickly spread worldwide. Numerous accolades followed, including plays on countless TV shows such as Skins, Ugly Betty and Gossip Girl, as well as on feature films and in video games. On the live circuit, they played Glastonbury in 2009 and toured the USA with Muse in 2010.

Synths are front and centre of the mix for Passion Pit; something that founder/keyboardist/lead vocalist Michael Angelakos is fervent about. He has a particular love for hardware synths, and credits them, not software instruments, for the fullness of the sound found on Passion Pit records. So when Novation's UltraNova came out, and with a new album in the making, he knew he had to have one. He considers Novation to be "part of the new league of hardware synthesizer producers", adding that "Novation has done a great job with the UltraNova."

Michael continues, "The engine is quicker than you might think, and the interface is customizable and easy to set to your technical specifications. The sound especially serves a very important role for me: I'm constantly looking for good digital synthesizers (not VSTs) to offset the analog weight in Passion Pit's music. I like FM, linear, and great digital synths, so when I learned that the UltraNova was a vocoder, I was eager to see how well it performs. With 70 or so oscillators and wavetables and easy-to-sculpt modifiers and modulation sources/destinations, the synth sounds warm and abrasive, personal, and not 'stock'.

"There are vocoders all over the new Passion Pit album, but you won't hear them the way most people expect to; at least not most of the time. UltraNova helped me to be hyper-specific: selecting whatever microphone I wanted, running through aggressive or subtle outboard compressors/limiters and looping blown-out samples from my computer. Then going in and tweaking the sound, which doesn't take long. Sometimes I'd layer multiple presets that I thought were rather corny, but with a bit of post, the outcome was gorgeous. The Novation was just easy, and there are definitely places where, mixed or not, other vocoders couldn't cut through the mix — especially on more percussive tracks. This is a testament both to the engine and the synth itself. Post-UltraNova work is fun as well, as it's not fussy or temperamental like other older vocoders. It does really well with both in-the-box and out-of-the-box effects and manipulation.

"The vocoder was extraordinarily useful and the synth itself is really fun and accessible. I even used it as a controller at one point for my computer, bus-powered. But hopefully the wide spectrum of possibilities provided by Novation in regards to its vocoder will help people see that integrating such a vocoder into what we'd first perceive as just a 'digital synth' is connecting it to a greater production mentality. At such a great price, I'd be excited to hear people use vocoding to the greatest extent — it just baffles me how boring so many units have made vocoding seem. Perhaps the UltraNova will change that and inspire some increased creativity in the vocoder world. Thanks Novation!"

Novation At The Heart Of Gotye Rig

Launchpad & Bass Station Are Central To Live Show

Like many musical sensations, Gotye (aka. Wally De Backer), got his big break with a little help from YouTube. It was the imaginative music video for his single 'Somebody That I Used To Know', featuring Kiwi singer Kimbra, which first boosted his profile to near-astronomical levels (of course, it's a great song too). With a rapidly rising 91 million hits and gargantuan chart success around the world, Gotye is almost certain to be here to stay.

A key part to the Gotye live show is Novationʼs Launchpad, three of which take their place among a host of other gear on stage. The band travels with five Launchpads in total, with Wally and band member Tim Shiel using them to control Ableton Live. Wally describes the setup, "Tim and I play a Launchpad each in the show, triggering various samples in each song. Tim makes his display lots of coloured lights in User mode, receiving MIDI feedback information from Ableton." Novation's classic Bass Station synth also features prominently in the live setup, played by bass player Lucas Taranto, who says, simply, “the Bass Station rocks!”

Launchpad was co-designed by Novation and Ableton to provide completely flexible control of Ableton Live. Gotyeʼs show, plus dozens of other shows that feature virtual instrumentation, is indicative of just how adaptable Launchpad is to different situations. Whether in the studio or live — triggering clips or playing virtual instruments — Launchpad is the perfect fit. The Bass Station, though no longer manufactured, is still available as a virtual instrument from Novation.

RØDE Microphones is very excited to announce today’s launch of ‘RØDE Rocks’ - an international band competition designed to locate and showcase the best in independent, unsigned talent around the world and reward them with an all expenses paid recording session in Hollywood with renowned producer Alain Johannes, as well as studio prize packs consisting of microphones and speakers.

To enter ‘RØDE Rocks’, artists need to record an original composition of more than two minutes in length and then create an accompanying video that features at least one RØDE microphone. After uploading the video to YouTube the artist simply needs to visit www.roderocks.com and submit their details along with a link to the video. At the end of June 2012 a panel of guest judges including Matt Sorum (Guns n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, The Cult), David Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal), Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist (The Hives), James Lavelle (UNKLE, MoWax), Band of Horses, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Har Mar Superstar, Deuce and Warpaint will reduce the number of entrants to ten finalists, and those videos will be showcased on the RØDE website for a two week period in which all visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite performance.

First prize winners will receive return flights to Los Angeles, California to record at the famous Record Plant studios in Hollywood, with superstar producer Alain Johannes. Johannes is one of rock’s most in-demand collaborators, following his work with artists such as Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Lanegan, Them Crooked Vultures and more. Providing additional production and engineering support during the recording session will be John Merchant (Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz, Phil Ramone) and Grammy Award winner Francis Buckley (Quincy Jones, Aerosmith, Alanis Morisette, Paula Abdul, LL Cool J, Black Flag). Additionally the winning artist(s) will receive vocal training throughout the sessions from SLS certified instructor Robert ‘RAab’ Stevenson (Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, The Singing Office). The resulting recording will be professionally mixed and mastered, and provided to the winning artist to release as they see fit.

Second and third prize winners will each receive a studio prize pack consisting of a number of studio and live performance microphones and studio monitors from Event, totalling over US$15,000 in value.

“A quick tour of the most popular independent YouTube artists will show that RØDE is already the microphone of choice for showcasing these incredible talents” commented Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Sales & Marketing Director. “We’re very excited about the ‘RØDE ROCKS’ competition being the connector between these great independent talents and some of the music industry’s finest artists, producers and engineers, as well as offering the winner a once-in-a-lifetime, money-can’t-buy recording experience!”

RØDE Rocks judge and rock n’ roll icon David Catching was blown away at the scale of the prizes. “You better have immense talent to win this chance of working with Alain, John, Francis and RØDE at Record Plant, because you’ll be involved with the best of the best and coolest of the cool! This combination of bad assery is a dream come true!” he exclaimed.

“I wish I wasn’t a judge, cause I’d give my right arm to be recording with these awesome men, on these amazing mics at this legendary studio! Give it your best, because that’s what you’ll get in return!”

Full terms and conditions are available on the competition website.
Dr Jim Marshall OBE 1923-2012

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of the beloved founder and leader for the past 50 years, Jim Marshall. While mourning the Guv’nor though, we also salute a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life.

Jim’s ascent into the history books as ‘the Father of Loud’ and the man responsible for ‘the Sound of Rock’ is a true rags-to-riches tale. Cruelly robbed of his youth by tubercular bones, Jim rose to become one of the four forefathers responsible for creating the tools that allowed rock guitar as we know and love it today to be born. The ground breaking quartet also includes the late, great trio of Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover – together with Jim, they truly are the cornerstones of all things rock.

In addition to the creation of the amps chosen by countless guitar heroes and game changing bands, Jim was also an incredibly humble and generous man who, over the past several decades, has quietly donated many millions of pounds to worthy causes.

While the entire Rockshop and Marshall Amplification family mourns Jim’s passing and will miss him tremendously, we all feel richer for having known him and are happy in the knowledge that he is now in a much better place which has just got a whole lot louder!

Rest in Peace & thank you Jim.

Your memory; the music and joy your amps have brought to countless millions for the past five decades; and that world-famous, omnipresent script logo that proudly bears your name will always live on.
