A very thin iron coating is applied to the wood of the body and oxidized through a sophisticated and controlled procedure creating actual rust rather than an imitation. Even magnets are able to stick to the surface because of this unique finish. As a special highlight, the pick-ups are coated and parts of the hardware are artificially aged. The result is a fascinating mix of extraordinary looks, stunning acoustical properties, and a unique feeling. Typically Warwick; anything but normal.

Rusty - Streamer LX

In 1996, the Streamer LX appeared on Warwick's product list for the very first time. Now it has been submitted to a model upgrade: an ergonomic construction with an arched, two-piece Maple body, shaped for ultimate playing comfort, combined with a bolt-on Ovangkol neck with a Wenge fingerboard and solid chrome hardware.

As a 4-string, the Streamer LX is equipped with a P/J-pickup configuration, as 5-string it comes with a J/J-, and as 6-string with H/H-equipment. Thus it produces the typical and variable Warwick-sound, bass-emphasised with a good punch, thanks to the used woods, its construction and the electronic components.

Jacob Randall wins Australasian V-Drums Championship

New Plymouth drummer Jacob Randall has won the Australasian V-Drum Championship. Jacob competed with five other finalists at the Australian V-Drums Festival in Sydney and won.

By winning the New Zealand V-Drums Championship he won a trip to Sydney to compete at the Australasian final held on Sunday 18th September 2011. By winning the Australasian Championship he won $1000 of Roland gear, along with an all-expenses paid trip to the USA to compete at the International V-Drums Championship in January 2012. He will also receive personal tution from Roland's International V-Drum Clinician Johnny Rabb.

With the introduction of Players’ Choice, the innovative cymbal maker is providing a forum that allows drummers from around the world to choose its 2012 product offering. Propellerhead Software Releases Recycle 2.2 Software Update

ReCycle 2.2 is a free update that brings is 64-bit compatibility, is Mac OS X Lion compatible, and has a new look and some workflow improvements.

The program is now compatible with 64 bit operating systems.
ReCyle 2.2 is also a true Cocoa program under Mac OS and fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.
The main window has been graphically redesigned, including new zooming and scrolling. Scrolling is smoother and you can now zoom in further. Some redundant controls have been removed and others added.
When exporting AIFF and Wave files, Record/Reason-style tempo information is now included in the file. Also, when importing audio files created in Record or Reason, the tempo information in those files is used for setting tempo and length in ReCycle.
The Waveform now indicates graphically what sound will be played back, by dimming silent sections.
You can now use the Q, W, E and R keys to select tools.
The Preference dialog has been streamlined and updated.
Open Recent (documents) is now a sub-menu on Mac OS.
The status bar has been removed.
We have removed support for the Sound Designer II, Mixman and SampleCell formats since these are all outdated.
The authorization system and copy protection has been changed, reducing the risk of having to reauthorize the program.
Installation under Mac OS is now drag and drop (no installer).

Numark Announces N4, a New Four-Channel DJ Controller with Mixer

The N4 DJ controller delivers four channels of control plus the ability to use time-coded vinyl.

Cumberland, R.I. (Sep. 29, 2011) – Numark, the world’s leading manufacturer of DJ technology, introduces N4, a four-channel DJ controller with built-in mixer. Numark will unveil N4 at booth F3 at BPM 2011 in Birmingham, England from October 1st – October 3rd.

Featuring 4-decks of software control plus a built-in mixer that can be used with or without a computer, N4 is designed for DJs who want powerful capability in a lightweight, portable package. This complete 4-channel controller has everything DJs need to perform at their highest level: large, touch-sensitive platters, 4-decks of software control with loop and effects controls, a built-in USB audio interface and a comprehensive mixer section with EQ, and gain. N4 will come with both Serato DJ Intro software and a 4-deck version of Virtual DJ LE.

The N4 DJ controller with a mixer is built for flexible control of virtually any music source. Its built-in DJ mixer allows DJs to mix any external source including turntables, CD players and MP3 players. DJs are able to instantly switch from controlling 4 decks of software to controlling 2 decks of software plus 2 channels of external source.

With the ability to use time code, N4 sets a new standard for 4-channel DJ controllers in its class. In addition to 4-decks of MIDI software control, N4 gives DJs the ability to use their CD player or turntable to control advanced DJ software by employing turntables with time-coded vinyl or CD players with time-coded CDs.

Troy Sanders of Mastodon chooses Warwick Basses

Mastodon is an American metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1999. The band is composed of Troy, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. They have released
five full-length albums to date, expanding their musical borders from early raw sludge riffs to later psychedelic multi-layered songs, yet maintaining progressive style with unusual time signatures and odd instrumentation.

Mastodon has risen through the ranks of the metal underground to playing sold-out arena tours with the likes of Metallica, Alice in Chains, the Deftones, and Dillinger Escape Plan. They are widely considered to be at the forefront of the recent upswing in heavy metalís popularity around the globe.

Their latest record, entitled The Hunter, was released on Roadrunner/Reprise on Sept 26th, 2011.

Warwick has inaugurated the occasion by building a custom Mastodon-themed Streamer Stage II, adorned with symbols from their past albums in beautiful silver inlay and bestowing it on Troy.

The Ladder features include:

Low Pass and High Pass: The Ladder has inherited the smoothest all analog filter section possible. Choose between LP and HP at the flick of a switch.

Cutoff: Simply adjust this knob to determine where The Ladder begins to sculpt the sound.

Attack and Release: These variable controls allow you to perfectly dial in the timing behavior of The Ladder's envelope section. Use them to open and close the envelope as fast as lightning, or slow as molasses.

Amount: Use in Positive or Negative mode for mild to extreme sound shaping and manipulation. The amount determines how much signal is sent to the envelope section of The Ladder. From slight timbral excitement and voicing to extreme compression-like behavior and even reversed filtering is achievable.

Resonance: Controls the amount of harmonic bump at the cutoff frequency. This is the voice of The Ladder. Create sweet, dynamic or extreme speech like behavior and beyond. Accentuate specific frequencies to excite a sound or create completely new and unique ones.

NOTE: The Ladder's Resonance control can push the unit into self-oscillation. This can be used for effect if desired.

2Pole/4Pole: Select how aggressive the filter slope is. 2 pole is equal to 12db per octave, which is smooth and sweet, while 4 pole is 24db per octave, which is hard, aggressive and most similar to a Classic Moog filter.

When well-known TV comedian and Radio DJ Jeremy ‘Corbie’ Corbett announced his retirement from Auckland’s MORE FM radio station after 18 years on air, he had no idea what his colleagues had in store for him.

In appreciation of his years of excellent service to the NZ radio industry, Jeremy was recently presented with a surprise gift of a magnificent Fender Custom Shop ’57 Relic Stratocaster in stunning white blonde – supplied by NZ Rockshops. Corbie’s fans and workmates alike will know that he is quite a keen guitarist, who had been known to profess to colleagues on the occasional basis that his “dream guitar” was a Fender Custom Shop Relic Stratocaster with a maple fretboard.

NZ Rockshops were there to watch the presentation of the guitar to the venerable comedian….. who , for once, was almost stuck for words. “I’m floored”, Corbie managed to utter, whilst viewing this beautiful ash-bodied blonde for this first time.
“Like all Fender Custom Shop guitars, this Strat is an absolute work of art,” says Rockshop’s Guitar Product Manager, Matt Walsham. “Only the best grade woods go into these guitars and the craftsmen that build them are second to none. I played this one myself before it was presented to Jeremy and it’s an amazing guitar!”

Fender Custom Shop were the first company to popularise the now-common “Relicing” phenomenon back in the 1990’s – by coming up with an idea to make a brand-new guitar look like it’s been heavily gigged for thirty years. The finished article looks incredibly convincing and is a sought after style of guitar, hunted by afficianados everywhere. Jeremy’s new pride and joy features an Ash Body, 50’s style neck profile, single ply pickgard and a high-degree of “Relicing”.

Novation UltraNova: Passion Pit's Synth Sensation

Passion Pit rose to fame in the late 2000s with the infectious, hands-in-the-air sound of their debut album Manners, which infiltrated the mainstream and quickly spread worldwide. Numerous accolades followed, including plays on countless TV shows such as Skins, Ugly Betty and Gossip Girl, as well as on feature films and in video games. On the live circuit, they played Glastonbury in 2009 and toured the USA with Muse in 2010.

Synths are front and centre of the mix for Passion Pit; something that founder/keyboardist/lead vocalist Michael Angelakos is fervent about. He has a particular love for hardware synths, and credits them, not software instruments, for the fullness of the sound found on Passion Pit records. So when Novation's UltraNova came out, and with a new album in the making, he knew he had to have one. He considers Novation to be "part of the new league of hardware synthesizer producers", adding that "Novation has done a great job with the UltraNova."

Michael continues, "The engine is quicker than you might think, and the interface is customizable and easy to set to your technical specifications. The sound especially serves a very important role for me: I'm constantly looking for good digital synthesizers (not VSTs) to offset the analog weight in Passion Pit's music. I like FM, linear, and great digital synths, so when I learned that the UltraNova was a vocoder, I was eager to see how well it performs. With 70 or so oscillators and wavetables and easy-to-sculpt modifiers and modulation sources/destinations, the synth sounds warm and abrasive, personal, and not 'stock'.

"There are vocoders all over the new Passion Pit album, but you won't hear them the way most people expect to; at least not most of the time. UltraNova helped me to be hyper-specific: selecting whatever microphone I wanted, running through aggressive or subtle outboard compressors/limiters and looping blown-out samples from my computer. Then going in and tweaking the sound, which doesn't take long. Sometimes I'd layer multiple presets that I thought were rather corny, but with a bit of post, the outcome was gorgeous. The Novation was just easy, and there are definitely places where, mixed or not, other vocoders couldn't cut through the mix — especially on more percussive tracks. This is a testament both to the engine and the synth itself. Post-UltraNova work is fun as well, as it's not fussy or temperamental like other older vocoders. It does really well with both in-the-box and out-of-the-box effects and manipulation.

"The vocoder was extraordinarily useful and the synth itself is really fun and accessible. I even used it as a controller at one point for my computer, bus-powered. But hopefully the wide spectrum of possibilities provided by Novation in regards to its vocoder will help people see that integrating such a vocoder into what we'd first perceive as just a 'digital synth' is connecting it to a greater production mentality. At such a great price, I'd be excited to hear people use vocoding to the greatest extent — it just baffles me how boring so many units have made vocoding seem. Perhaps the UltraNova will change that and inspire some increased creativity in the vocoder world. Thanks Novation!"

Novation At The Heart Of Gotye Rig

Launchpad & Bass Station Are Central To Live Show

Like many musical sensations, Gotye (aka. Wally De Backer), got his big break with a little help from YouTube. It was the imaginative music video for his single 'Somebody That I Used To Know', featuring Kiwi singer Kimbra, which first boosted his profile to near-astronomical levels (of course, it's a great song too). With a rapidly rising 91 million hits and gargantuan chart success around the world, Gotye is almost certain to be here to stay.

A key part to the Gotye live show is Novationʼs Launchpad, three of which take their place among a host of other gear on stage. The band travels with five Launchpads in total, with Wally and band member Tim Shiel using them to control Ableton Live. Wally describes the setup, "Tim and I play a Launchpad each in the show, triggering various samples in each song. Tim makes his display lots of coloured lights in User mode, receiving MIDI feedback information from Ableton." Novation's classic Bass Station synth also features prominently in the live setup, played by bass player Lucas Taranto, who says, simply, “the Bass Station rocks!”

Launchpad was co-designed by Novation and Ableton to provide completely flexible control of Ableton Live. Gotyeʼs show, plus dozens of other shows that feature virtual instrumentation, is indicative of just how adaptable Launchpad is to different situations. Whether in the studio or live — triggering clips or playing virtual instruments — Launchpad is the perfect fit. The Bass Station, though no longer manufactured, is still available as a virtual instrument from Novation.

RØDE Announces Worldwide BAND COMPETITION - RØDE ROCKS!

RØDE Microphones is very excited to announce today’s launch of ‘RØDE Rocks’ - an international band competition designed to locate and showcase the best in independent, unsigned talent around the world and reward them with an all expenses paid recording session in Hollywood with renowned producer Alain Johannes, as well as studio prize packs consisting of microphones and speakers.

To enter ‘RØDE Rocks’, artists need to record an original composition of more than two minutes in length and then create an accompanying video that features at least one RØDE microphone. After uploading the video to YouTube the artist simply needs to visit www.roderocks.com and submit their details along with a link to the video. At the end of June 2012 a panel of guest judges including Matt Sorum (Guns n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, The Cult), David Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal), Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist (The Hives), James Lavelle (UNKLE, MoWax), Band of Horses, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Har Mar Superstar, Deuce and Warpaint will reduce the number of entrants to ten finalists, and those videos will be showcased on the RØDE website for a two week period in which all visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite performance.

First prize winners will receive return flights to Los Angeles, California to record at the famous Record Plant studios in Hollywood, with superstar producer Alain Johannes. Johannes is one of rock’s most in-demand collaborators, following his work with artists such as Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Lanegan, Them Crooked Vultures and more. Providing additional production and engineering support during the recording session will be John Merchant (Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz, Phil Ramone) and Grammy Award winner Francis Buckley (Quincy Jones, Aerosmith, Alanis Morisette, Paula Abdul, LL Cool J, Black Flag). Additionally the winning artist(s) will receive vocal training throughout the sessions from SLS certified instructor Robert ‘RAab’ Stevenson (Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, The Singing Office). The resulting recording will be professionally mixed and mastered, and provided to the winning artist to release as they see fit.

Second and third prize winners will each receive a studio prize pack consisting of a number of studio and live performance microphones and studio monitors from Event, totalling over US$15,000 in value.

Dr Jim Marshall OBE 1923-2012

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of the beloved founder and leader for the past 50 years, Jim Marshall. While mourning the Guv’nor though, we also salute a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life.

Jim’s ascent into the history books as ‘the Father of Loud’ and the man responsible for ‘the Sound of Rock’ is a true rags-to-riches tale. Cruelly robbed of his youth by tubercular bones, Jim rose to become one of the four forefathers responsible for creating the tools that allowed rock guitar as we know and love it today to be born. The ground breaking quartet also includes the late, great trio of Leo Fender, Les Paul and Seth Lover – together with Jim, they truly are the cornerstones of all things rock.

In addition to the creation of the amps chosen by countless guitar heroes and game changing bands, Jim was also an incredibly humble and generous man who, over the past several decades, has quietly donated many millions of pounds to worthy causes.

While the entire Rockshop and Marshall Amplification family mourns Jim’s passing and will miss him tremendously, we all feel richer for having known him and are happy in the knowledge that he is now in a much better place which has just got a whole lot louder!

Rest in Peace & thank you Jim.

Your memory; the music and joy your amps have brought to countless millions for the past five decades; and that world-famous, omnipresent script logo that proudly bears your name will always live on.
