Rockshop Second Chance

the Smokefree rockquest NATIONAL FINALS

Part of the magic of live performance is that you can never predict exactly what will happen. You can prepare but sometimes, things still don't go your way - strings break, leads fall out, bass players fall off stages, drummers lose their sticks or break limbs the day before, keyboards mysteriously slip into transpose mode and singers lose their voices, can't hear themselves or just have a bad night.

If things on the night don't go your way for some reason, and you meet the following conditions that demonstrate your band is already doing the things that lead to success, then you can get a ROCKSHOP SECOND CHANCE - we're not promising you a spot in the National Final, but we will listen to you again and compare you with the other National Final contenders.

To qualify for a ROCKSHOP SECOND CHANCE, you need to have:

  • been selected to perform at a Smokefreerockquest 2013 Regional Final
  • performed at least five gigs in the last 12 months
  • have at least one song recorded to demo standard or better

If you qualify for a ROCKSHOP SECOND CHANCE, you have the option of completing the following task and then being considered for the National Final. In addition to the task, you will need to provide evidence that you qualify
eg. A CD of your demo and details of the gigs.

The National Final Selection Task

You are required to submit a DVD of your band performing live at least 15 minutes of original music. You may play more than this but we will only access the first 15 min, so play your strongest material first!
NB. We are not looking for, or expecting, a music video!

The DVD should clearly feature the band or solo/duo, and be easily accessible. It is not intended that this be filmed in a public performance situation. It is more important that you set it up to get the best sound quality you can. We do not expect studio quality sound, but suggest sound checking the balance to ensure all parts can be heard. You may re-record it if you are not happy with the sound; it does not need to be a "first take" recording. Each song on the submitted footage is to be a one camera, unedited recording of you performing live with NO overdubs or manipulation! The performance is to be submitted to us on DVD and uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo. Please complete and sign the declaration and summary sheet included.

The DVD and Declaration must be completed and couriered to "The Smokefreerockquest Office", 72A Rutherford Street, Nelson. It must arrive no later than 21 days after your Regional Final, AND no later than Friday 2nd August. Please send the courier name and tracking number by email or by txt to 021 746 876 when it has been sent. We will post you a receipt when we receive it.

Good Luck, from NZ Rockshops and Smokefreerockquest.
